Tanzania 2004 - Ol Doinyo Lengai

This volcano is a sacred mountain. It is about 2900 m high. In Masaai language the name means "Mountain of God". It is a very special volcano because it is the only volcano in the world that erupts carbonatite. It produces the 'coolest' lava of any volcanoes in the world. There are many websites where you can find more information on the Lengai. It is an active volcano. Unfortunately when we were there, we didn't see any activity apart from smoke coming from holes in the crater. We started the climb at about 02:00 am and reached the crater rim between 08:00 am and 09:00 am. It was a hard and difficult climb and most of us considered it dangerous. The only picture I made during the climb, was when I reached the crater rim. Well, to be more precise, someone else made the picture with my camera.
